At the church I visited Sunday, they sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," in honor of the 4th. The words were superimposed over a waving U.S. flag. But the lyrics they used didn't have anything to do with the nation, so I looked up the background of the hymn. It was written during the civil war--when our nation was fighting itself.

That's not funny. But I also found this:

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Updated" was written in 1901 by Mark Twain, as a parody of American imperialism, in the wake of the Philippine-American War.

Mine eyes have seen the orgy of the launching of the Sword;
He is searching out the hoardings where the stranger's wealth is stored;
He hath loosed his fateful lightnings, and with woe and death has scored;
His lust is marching on.

I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;

We didn't go to church at all because we were so afraid of encountering something like this and having an adverse response.

However we did wake up this morning with a flag stuck in our yard, someone went around under the cover of night and stuck flags in every yard all over town. We fantasized about burning ours. ..............

Short-term missions team returns in righteous anger

KOKOMO, Ind. — A short-term missions team from Abundant Life Church returned from Guatemala convinced that Christians in their home church are backslidden, fat and lazy, according to people in the church.

"All we hear since they got back is, 'You should see those Guatemalans. They're really committed to God,'" says one spouse who did not go on the trip. She, like many others, say her spouse and friends have become intolerable scolds since coming home.

Only a week earlier, when the team left, they believed they were going to encourage and support the tiny church in the Guatemalan jungle. But in seven short days, the Guatemalan Christians encouraged them.

"They own so little, yet they worship God with abandon, they share everything they own, they work hard and they love each other," says one woman, breaking into tears. "The American church has no clue what authentic Christianity is all about."

She and other team members started an exclusive Bible study to maintain their spiritual fervor. They hope every member of the church will visit the Guatemala church to experience "genuine Christ-likeness" firsthand.

But some team members already show signs of returning to their former selves.

"I brought home the wrong flavor of Pringles and he got mad," says a woman whose husband was on the construction team. "That's a good sign. A week ago he would have been super-holy about it."
