a direct link to the nice image of that page (a german daily newspaper) won't work (i tried this)

so you need to click the link.. sorry.. (and i didn't want to just "steal" the image file and upload it somewhere else..)

http://www.taz.de/pt/2005/06/04.nf/kari

(translation: "how Gerhard Schröder (the german chancellor) anyhow won the next election")

(explanation: the person on image is angela merkel (in september we will maybe have an election ..it was planed to have it one year later.. but now we have some strange situation in gvernment.. so it is necessary to have the election one year earlier..) .. she isfamilar to "republicans".. and she has more than best chances to be the next chancellor (VIP in german government system)
and schröder is somehow a bit familar with "democrats".. if that is comparable anyway.. in fact he has no chances to be reelected now..
if you need more explanation.. just ask..)

A couple related ones I saw this weekend while in Cleveland. An Onion headline:

Man Accidentally Ends Business Call With "I Love You"

And, from the New Yorker:

At the church I visited Sunday, they sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," in honor of the 4th. The words were superimposed over a waving U.S. flag. But the lyrics they used didn't have anything to do with the nation, so I looked up the background of the hymn. It was written during the civil war--when our nation was fighting itself.

That's not funny. But I also found this:

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Updated" was written in 1901 by Mark Twain, as a parody of American imperialism, in the wake of the Philippine-American War.
Quote:
Mine eyes have seen the orgy of the launching of the Sword;
He is searching out the hoardings where the stranger's wealth is stored;
He hath loosed his fateful lightnings, and with woe and death has scored;
His lust is marching on.

I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded him an altar in the Eastern dews and damps;
I have read his doomful mission by the dim and flaring lamps--
His night is marching on.

I have read his bandit gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my pretensions, so with you my wrath shall deal;
Let the faithless son of Freedom crush the patriot with his heel;
Lo, Greed is marching on!"

We have legalized the strumpet and are guarding her retreat;*
Greed is seeking out commercial souls before his judgement seat;
O, be swift, ye clods, to answer him! be jubilant my feet!
Our god is marching on!

In a sordid slime harmonious Greed was born in yonder ditch,
With a longing in his bosom--and for others' goods an itch.
As Christ died to make men holy, let men die to make us rich--
Our god is marching on.

* NOTE: In Manila the Government has placed a certain industry under the protection of our flag. (M.T.)
That last verse is my favorite...

What kind of church was it?

We didn't go to church at all because we were so afraid of encountering something like this and having an adverse response.

However we did wake up this morning with a flag stuck in our yard, someone went around under the cover of night and stuck flags in every yard all over town. We fantasized about burning ours. ..............

I really want a bumper sticker that says "God Bless the Whole World". Anyone know where I might find one?

You could make one here (a ribbon however, not a bumpersticker)

I remember goose posted a picture one time of himself with his truck and it had a bumpersticker that said, "Bless God America"

I think this gif is hilarious, but I imagine some of you will find it somewhat tasteless.

I'm in Bronson, MI, headed towards the Mennofolk festival (just north of Elkhart, IN; http://www.mennofolk.org/michiana/ ). Should be there in time for the music Sunday afternoon.

Here's a good cartoon from the New Yorker:

From the Onion:

Marine Corps Shortens Slogan To 'The Few'

WASHINGTON, DC—In light of recruiting shortfalls, a near standstill
in re-enlistment, and rock-bottom troop morale, U.S. Marine Corps
Commandant Gen. Michael Hagee announced Monday that the
Marines will alter their unofficial slogan, abbreviating it to the more
accurate "The Few." Hagee said, "We are still the Marines, the
premier combat arm of the U.S. military." The Marines will also
change their motto to Semper Fidelis, Sic Non Sapienti, or "Always
Faithful, But This Is Just Ridiculous."

A little satire I wrote, you might appreicate it...

CITIZENS OF AMERICA

The threat of terrorism grows worse every hour. It is now that your nation needs you. We cannot let 9/11 happen again. Those brave men and woman, heros of our nation, coffee-pot wielding supermen, those people who died in those two towers on that horrible fateful day. Their ghosts cry out to you, their innocent spilit blood cries for us to avenge them. This means you, yes, you, the individual citizen, the working people of this nation, the mother, the father, those people that make our country what it is, these people, you, must help us. We have heard reports of terrorism right under our very noses, but this is worse, now we hear these reports of terrorism right INSIDE our very noses! The nose, the prominent facial feature so important to American society, has been subverted for the terrorist cause. The nose resembles the oil-rich and cave-riddled lands of Iraq and Afghanistan. Now more than ever, you either with us, or you are against us.You must search your nasal cavity on a regular basis in an attempt to remove these foreign intruders form our soil. Bin Laden could be hiding in those oily caves on your face. Do what you can to prevent terror. Pick your nose now. Remember. You are Homeland Security.

From LarkNews...

Quote:
Short-term missions team returns in righteous anger

KOKOMO, Ind. — A short-term missions team from Abundant Life Church returned from Guatemala convinced that Christians in their home church are backslidden, fat and lazy, according to people in the church.

"All we hear since they got back is, 'You should see those Guatemalans. They're really committed to God,'" says one spouse who did not go on the trip. She, like many others, say her spouse and friends have become intolerable scolds since coming home.

Only a week earlier, when the team left, they believed they were going to encourage and support the tiny church in the Guatemalan jungle. But in seven short days, the Guatemalan Christians encouraged them.

"They own so little, yet they worship God with abandon, they share everything they own, they work hard and they love each other," says one woman, breaking into tears. "The American church has no clue what authentic Christianity is all about."

She and other team members started an exclusive Bible study to maintain their spiritual fervor. They hope every member of the church will visit the Guatemala church to experience "genuine Christ-likeness" firsthand.

But some team members already show signs of returning to their former selves.

"I brought home the wrong flavor of Pringles and he got mad," says a woman whose husband was on the construction team. "That's a good sign. A week ago he would have been super-holy about it."
